Trend watch: leopard prints and velvet

As part of my new ‘Trend Watch’ series, I have identified a few looks (some not so new) from the S/S 2017 fashion shows including leopard prints and velvet. You can be sure that these styles will filter down into interiors and so below are a few tips on how to style it up and where to shop for the look.

I am a fan of velvet but there are a few guidelines to follow in order to protect this delicate fabric.  Velvet sofa’s look gorgeous but unlike a durable material, such as leather, they need a little more TLC.  Do a little bit of homework before you buy and opt for a company that offers (hopefully free) a stain resistant scotch guard, this way you can return the sofa if you have a stubborn mark that can’t be removed. I would advise going for a darker colour such as midnight blue or grey, the one below is a steal at just £549 from Furniture Village.  Mix and match your velvet sofa with others fabrics, a linen armchair would look great and you could choose a velvet cushion for this to continue your scheme throughout the room. Loaf have a great selection to choose from.

Leopard prints…again. Yes, this little print seems to come back year on year, in fact, I don’t think it ever goes away. This print works best on smaller items such as an ottoman, cushions or a rug, I would be VERY hesitant to go for a leopard print sofa as it would be far too overbearing. One idea might be to have a leopard print wallpaper in a gown-up snug or downstairs cloakroom – that would be so fun! I am thinking about this for our downstairs bathroom but need to get it past the other half first! Graham and Brown sell a good value wallpaper option.
